This year, the B20, an international forum, hosted the B20 sustainability 4.0, a joint European-Indonesia project to promote sustainability in Indonesia. Importantly, an awards program is also hosted by international organizations such as the Swiss Chamber of Commerce, to recognize leading sustainable businesses in Indonesia for the first time. This award is designed to spotlight enterprises that demonstrate unique innovation and sustainability in Indonesia that has and will have long-lasting impacts

Awards were given in different key areas, including clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), responsible consumption and production (SDG 12), and empowered women in sustainability (SDG 5). Clearly, these awards were aimed to highlight critical areas where growth is needed in Indonesia, which is why the award winners were so deserving of recognition.

Proudly, Du Anyam is humbled to take home an award for the empowered women in the sustainability category. Tackling arguably one of the hardest categories, Du Anyam has been creating unique solutions to sustainably empower women in rural Indonesia. For the past eight years, we have partnered up with women weavers across hundreds of different communities in rural Indonesia to encourage and aid them in weaving. As a result, we were able to link these female weavers to steady sources of revenue so they can support themselves and their families.

Importantly, this model is one that is both sustainable and replicable, as it can be applied across Indonesia in a wide variety of regions and with different commodities.

Moreover, Du Anyam has offered training including in digital literacy, management, and weaving, in order to help women increase their skill sets and access more opportunities. With these workshops, we’ve seen immense growth in the confidence and skills of our weavers, allowing them to take on more leadership positions.

Du Anyam also cares about the environmental aspects of the regions we work in. Through our community training in practicing sustainable harvesting & replanting methods, all of our resources are being used and grown in a sustainable manner. We optimize raw materials that grow abundantly in the region we work with ie. Purun (origins: South Kalimantan) and Palmyra (origins: East Nusa Tenggara) and this contributes to carbon emission (transportation) reduction in our supply chain process. We also ensure any raw materials leftover are being used as fertilizers.

Du Anyam’s award and recognition show our amazing solution to a longstanding problem Indonesia has faced. We look forward to what the future will bring, as Du Anyam leads more women to be empowered.
