As the driving force behind Ong Cen Kuang, Budiman Ong is best known for his mastery in conceptual lighting art & designs. Pioneering the now global brand, his recent achievements include winning the design anthology awards 2019 and recognition by a growing list of reputable publications . His collection speaks of otherworldly artistry and visual beauty, matched only by the impeccable functionality.

JIA by OCK

During the recent pandemic, Budiman has just launched a new home decor line JIA by OCK . With Jia which literally means “home” – a nod to his Asian heritage – this sister brand focuses on home delights boasting simple silhouettes with educational and purposeful values. Which is why when the Bali-based designer, who also believes in our social mission, took our hands in collaboration, we knew something ingenious was brewing.

As brands who share the same passion for natural aesthetics and basic materials, Du Anyam x Jia by OCK is truly a match made in handcraft heaven. Budiman is well known for his love and respect towards materials he hand-works with, retaining their original characteristics while paying special attention in the pursuit of new possibilities and designs

Similarly, Budiman preserves the form and features of traditional handcrafts by our Flores women weavers, whilst testing out elements to complement the use and appeal. True to form, he manages to spin out a refreshing twist on our existing products and adds heightened functions perfect for everyday use. There’s Dese and Keleka, our Flores-made hexagonal trays which now come with a white or black handle to making organizing that much more practical, portable, and stylish.

The genius of Budiman, is no surprise to many. Still, his ability to extend from OCK to Jia by OCK is a feat of its own – especially when it’s primarily to sustain the life of his artisans during Covid-19. He shared how the outbreak brings out a force of creativity, and that communities can overcome challenges, as long as we’re united in stride.

Today, it may just be home accessories in addition to these lighting creations. Tomorrow, who knows? And that’s something that needs to be celebrated, not feared, for there is always new light at the end of any challenging situation.
